Dr. Yasmeen Abu-Laban

Biography / Biographie:

Yasmeen Abu-Laban is Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada. Her research interests centre on the Canadian and comparative dimensions of ethnic and gender politics; nationalism, globalization and processes of racialization; immigration policies and politics; surveillance and border control; human rights, and citizenship theory. Dr. Abu-Laban served as President of the Canadian Political Science Association/Association canadienne de science politique (CPSA/ACSP) in 2016-2017.  She also served as an elected member of the Executive Committee of the International Political Science Association (IPSA) in 2016-2018.  She sits on the editorial board of Canadian Ethnic Studies/脡tudes ethniques au Canada, has given numerous invited presentations across Canada and internationally, and regularly speaks and works with Canadian government and community organizations. She has been a visiting scholar at the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington, as well as at Queen's University and University of Toronto. She was awarded a Killam Professorship in 2013 on the basis of 鈥渙utstanding scholarship and teaching [and] a record of substantial contributions to the community.鈥  Dr. Abu-Laban chaired the CPSA/ACSP Diversity Task Force, which produced national reports dealing with the political science profession in Canada in 2010 and 2012.  She also chaired the committee producing the 5X社区Gender and Diversity Monitoring Report, 2017.   Additionally, she facilitated the founding of the 5X社区Research Committee on Migration and Citizenship (RC46) in 2018, and was an active member on the 5X社区Membership and Participation Committee between 2016-2018.

Hasret Dikici Bilgin is Associate Professor of Political and Vice Chair of the Department of International Relations Science at Istanbul Bilgi University, Turkey since 2016. She was Assistant Professor of Political Science at Istanbul Okan University, Turkey from 2009 to 2016. She is currently the Secretary General of the Turkish Political Science Association. Her research and teaching interests are comparative political institutions with a specific focus on the pro-Islamist parties, as well as class and religion, elections in the Middle East, constitutional engineering and coalition politics.

Rodney Hero is the Haas Chair in Diversity & Democracy, and Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of California, Berkeley. His research focuses on American democracy and politics, especially as viewed through the analytical lenses of Latino Politics, Racial/Ethnic Politics, State & Urban Politics, and Federalism. His book, Latinos and the U.S. Political System: Two-tiered Pluralism, received the American Political Science Association's [APSA] 1993 Ralph J. Bunche Award. He also authored Faces of Inequality: Social Diversity in American Politics (selected for the APSA鈥檚 Woodrow Wilson Award in 1999), and Racial Diversity and Social Capital: Equality and Community in America (2007). He has also co-authored other books, including Black-Latino Relations in U.S. National Politics: Beyond Conflict or Cooperation. . He has also authored and co-authored a number of articles in scholarly journals, and chapters in edited books He was President of the American Political Science Association (2014-15), and served as President of the Midwest Political Science Association (2007-08) and President of the Western Political Science Association (1999-2000). He has also served on the editorial board of a number of major political science journals. He previously held faculty positions as Packey J. Dee Professor of American Democracy in the Department of Political Science at the University of Notre Dame (2000-10), at the University of Colorado at Boulder (1989-2000)

Prof. Christopher Isike

Biography / Biographie:

Christopher Isike, PhD is a Professor of African Politics and Development, Department Political Sciences, University of Pretoria, South Africa. An Africanist scholar by research standpoint, Prof Isike鈥檚 teaching and research interests revolve around the quality of women鈥檚 political representation in Africa, women and peace-building in Africa, African immigration to South Africa, human security, human factor development in Africa, African soft power politics and development dynamics. A C3 rated researcher by South Africa鈥檚 National Research Foundation (NRF), Prof Isike has published scores of quality articles in international peer-reviewed journals. He consults for the UNFPA, UNICEF, UN Women and the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government on gender equality and women empowerment issues in the province. In recognition of his work on gender equality in Africa, he was selected by the South African government to be part of a KwaZulu-Natal government delegation to Ethiopia on a study tour to explore its social transformation model in ending early childhood/forced marriages in 2013. In 2015, Prof Isike had a one year sabbatical stint as Senior Research Advisor at the Shell Petroleum Development Company in Nigeria where he was a programme monitoring and evaluation specialist in the External Relations Department of the company. He is the current Vice President of the South African Association of Political Science (SAAPS), an EXCO member of the International Political Science Association (IPSA) and member of reputable international bodies such as the Canadian Association of African Studies (CAAS), Resilience Peace, EPOS; Global conflict mediation and resolution network and Ontario International Development Agency (OIDA). He is happily married to Dr Efe Isike and they have 3 beautiful children; Oghenevieze (10), Ogheneruonah (8) and Oghenemaro (6).

Yuko Kasuya is a Professor of Political Science at the Faculty of Law, Keio University in Tokyo, Japan. Her research interests include democratization, democratic governance, political institutions, accountability and transparency. She is the author of Comparative Politics (in Japanese, Miverva Publishing, 2014) and Presidential Bandwagon: Parties and Party Systems in the Philippines (Keio University Press, 2008/Anvil, 2009). She has also edited Presidents, Assemblies, and Policy-Making in Asia (Palgrave MacMillan, 2013) and Politics of Change in the Philippines (co-edited with Nathan Quimpo, Anvil, 2010). Her articles can be found in Electoral Studies, The Pacific Affairs, and Party Politics. Kasuya holds a PhD in International Affairs from the University of California, San Diego, an MA in Development Studies from Institute of Social Studies (Netherlands), and a BA in Political Science from Keio University. Her research has been funded by the Abe fellowship, Fulbright scholarship, Rotary scholarship, and other sources. She was a visiting scholar at the Center on Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law at Stanford University April 2009 to March 2011.

Dr. Umut Korkut

Umut Korkut is Reader in International Politics at Glasgow School for Business and Society at Glasgow Caledonian University. Previously, I was Research Fellow in the School for Politics and International Relations at the University College Dublin (2007-2010). I completed my DPhil (magna cum laude) at Central European University in Budapest in 2004. In 2009, I was awarded Associate Professorship by the Turkish Higher Education Council. Since 2007, I have carried professional service and international roles for Political Studies Association as convenor of Comparative European Politics Specialist Group. In 2016, I was appointed as a Trustee for the Executive Committee of PSA. For the academic year 2015-2016, I have been a visiting fellow of the Slavic-Eurasian Research Centre at Hokkaido University () as part of a research group on interwar Eurasianism and Japan鈥檚 involvement in international politics.

I have an established research agenda, spanning a number of areas to which I apply discursive research tools. I have international and national reputation first in European politics, with specialisation in East European and Turkish politics; second in migration and forced migration with specialisation in East Mediterranean and Eastern Europe; and third in religion, gender and politics. In studies of these three fields, my research is quite distinctive in its use of different theories spanning from social representation theory, dialogical analysis, and comparative historical analysis to institutional analysis.

In 2018, I published new monograph entitled 鈥淧olitics and Gender Identity in Turkey: Centralised Islam for Socio-Economic Control鈥 with Routledge. I have also finalised an AHRC funded 鈥淭he Aesthetics of Protest: Visual Culture and Communication in Turkey鈥 project. At the moment, I am the Primary Investigator for a Horizon 2020 funded project RESPOND: Multi-level Governance of Mass Migration in Europe and Beyond (2017-2020)

Ferdinand M眉ller M眉ller-Rommel received his MA from the University of Florida and his PhD from the Free University of Berlin (Germany). He has worked as a civil servant in the Office of the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany followed by a Jean Monnet Fellowship at the European University in Florence and a professiorial position at the University of Duesseldorf. Since 2004, he is Professor of Comparative Politics and Director of the Center for the Study of Democracy (CSD) at Leuphana University L眉neburg, Germany. He was Visiting Professor at the University of New South Wales (Australia), the University of Miami, the University of California (Irvine), Siena University and the European University Institute. He was member of the ECPR Executive Committee (Vice-Chair and Treasurer, 1994-2000) and President of the German Political Science Association (2016-2018). He is co-editor of the ECPR/Oxford University Press series on Comparative Politics and has published numerous books and peer-review journal articles on political executives, party government, and party systems in Western democracies. Among his forthcoming book publications are The Oxford Handbook of Political Executives (ed. with Rudy Andeweg, Robert Elgie, Ludger Helms, and Juliet Kaarbo, Oxford University Press 2019 ).

Oilivier Nay is Professor of Political Science at Universit茅 Paris 1 Panth茅on-Sorbonne and professor-researcher at the Centre d'茅tudes et de recherches administratives politiques et sociales. He is Invited Professor at the School of International Public Affairs (SIPA) of Columbia University in 2018. For twenty years, he has conducted research on political institutions, from the local to the international level. Pablo Onate is Professor and Chair of Political Science at the University of Valencia. His primary field of research is comparative politics (representation and parliamentary elites; and secondarily elections and electoral behavior). He is the author and editor of several books and journal articles on these topics. He served as the Secretary General of the Spanish PSA (2005/2013) and secretary general of the LOC of the 5X社区22nd World Congress in Madrid. He was elected president of the European Confederation of Political Science Associations (2014 and 2016). He has also worked for several organizations in the international field (in several Central and Latin-American countries, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Myanmar) dealing with democratization, institutional reform and electoral system.

Simona Piattoni (MA Economics Bocconi University 1985, PhD Political Science, Massachusetts Institute of Technology 1996) is Full Professor of Political Science at the University of Trento (Italy) where she teaches courses in Comparative Politics, European Politics, Theories of European Integration, Multi-Level Governance, Local Government, Qualitative Methods of Political Research. She has taught also at the University of Troms酶 (Norway) (1994-2000) and University of Innsbruck (Austria) (2010-2011) and has spent research periods at the EUI (1999-2001) and at the University of California, Berkeley (2005, 2008). Hilmar Rommetvedt (b. 1951) is Head of Research in political science at IRIS 鈥 International Research Institute of Stavanger / NORCE 鈥 Norwegian Research Centre, and Adjunct Professor at the University of Stavanger. He has been member of 5X社区since 1988, and he is the Program Chair of RC08 Legislative Specialists (2012-2018). Rommetvedt is a member of the Board of the Division of Science of the Research Council of Norway, he has been vice chair of the Board of the National Institute for Consumer Research, and chair of Sola Municipal Board for Cultural Affairs. He has work experience from the Ministry of Education, the Norwegian Parliament, and the Norwegian Research Centre in Organization and Management. His research focuses on parliament, government and organized interests, and policy-making and implementation in various policy areas such as the environment, agriculture, culture, sport, international trade and health care services.

Rommetvedt is the (co-)author/(co-)editor of forty books including Parliamentary Change in the Nordic Countries, The Rise of the Norwegian Parliament, Sport Policy: A Comparative Analysis of Stability and Change (also published in Korean: 鞀ろ彫旄犾爼毂呺: 鞎堨爼瓿 氤頇旍潣 牍勱祼攵勳劃), The Value of Arts and Culture in Regional Development, Practices of Inter-Parliamentary Coordination in International Politics, International Trade Negotiations and Domestic Politics, The Nordic Models in Political Science, and several books in Norwegian. He is the President of the Polish Political Science Association (elected in 2016) and the Vice-President of the Political Sciences Committee of the Polish Academy of Science (elected in 2015).
