IPSA-FLACSO Mexico Summer School 2023
Concepts, Methods and Techniques in Political Science
5-30 June 2023
Virtual

The 8th Annual IPSA-FLACSO Mexico Summer School on Concepts, Methods and Techniques in Political Science was held virtually from 5-30 June 2023.

The 2023 edition was organized in collaboration with the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences, Mexico, the International Political Science Association and the Graduate Program in Political and Social Sciences of the UNAM

The online modality helped to welcome students from abroad to participate in the Summer School despite their location. This approach was successful, as the course was attended by students from South Korea, Bangladesh, Nicaragua, the United States, and different states in Mexico. The IPSA-FLACSO Mexico Summer School offered an intensive course of 3 hours per day taught by an international instructor, followed by a 2-hour laboratory session led by a teaching assistant. Sessions were both theoretical and practical to provide a fulfilling academic experience with the highest quality standards. The instructors encouraged students to provide examples of their research interests and to use their databases for analysis. Meanwhile, the laboratory sessions consisted of group assignments that put into practice what had been taught earlier in the class. And each morning, before the theoretical session, the instructor answered any questions that might have arisen during these group assignments.

16 people registered and participated in the 5X社区course Quantitative Modeling for the Social Sciences. Academic degrees of 5X社区course participants: Bachelor's degree (5), Master's degree (10), Ph.D. (1).

Flacso, M茅xico

The fourth Annual IPSA-FLACSO Mexico Summer School in Concepts, Methods and Techniques in Political Science was held at the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences in Mexico, from June 10 to June 21, 2019.

The fourth edition of the summer school offered a program of eight introductory one-week courses and four intensive two-week courses, where students received theoretical and practical training. They also participated in conferences, seminars and social activities organized by the local committee, integrated by  Irma M茅ndez, Georgina Flores, Rodrigo Salazar and Jacqueline Plascencia.

The eight introductory one-week courses that were taught with great success are:

  • Introduction to R , Julio Mart铆nez (El Colegio de Mexico)
  • Introduction to Stata, Ulises Flores (FLACSO Mexico)
  • Mathematical Tools for Quantitative Analysis, Rodrigo Salazar (FLACSO Mexico)
  • Data Visualization, Sebastian Garrido (Centro de Investigaci贸n y Docencias Econ贸micas, CIDE)
  • Survey Analysis and Sampling, Javier Marquez (Centro de Investigaci贸n y Docencias Econ贸micas, CIDE)
  • Statistical Analysis with R, Marisol Luna (FLACSO Mexico)
  • Statistical Analysis with Stata, Ulises Flores (FLACSO Mexico)
  • Introduction to Twitter Analysis with R, Georgina Flores (FLACSO Mexico)

The intensive two-week courses took place from Monday to Friday and lasted around four hours in the morning and two additional hours of computer lab sessions, to add the use of specific software to the curriculum. Additionally, participants had the opportunity to discuss their own research interests with instructors, and receive special advice about their specific needs. There was a coffee break in the middle of the day.

The four two-week courses that were taught are:

  • Quantitative Methods for Public Policy Analysis, Bruno Cautr猫s (Science PO Par铆s)
  • Modern Regression Analysis, Laron K. Williams (University of Missouri) and Cameron Wimpy (University of Massachusetts)
  • Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) and Case Study Research, Carsten Schneider (Central European University) and Werner J. Patzelt (Technische Universit盲t Dresden)
  • Data Science, Francisco Cantu (University of Houston)

The late afternoon special lectures by 5X社区instructors represented a great opportunity to examine the use of different methodologies on specific and substantial academic issues, as it was the case with 鈥淭he fingerprints of fraud: evidence from Mexico 1988, presidential election鈥. Furthermore, the instructors also offered evening lectures on more practical academic matters, such as: "How to be published", 鈥淗ow to apply to grad schools and postdocs in the US鈥" and 鈥淗ow social scientist may make use of history.

The fourth edition of the IPSA-FLACSO Mexico Summer School in Concepts, Methods and Techniques in Political Science ended with the distribution of certificates and a brindis which gave everyone the opportunity to networking and plan their participation  to the next summer school.

June 6-17, 2016
Flacso M茅xico

After its successful presentation in several countries around the world, the 5X社区Summer School on Concepts, Methods and Techniques in Political Science was held for the first time in FLACSO (Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales), M茅xico from June 6 to 17, 2016.

The school offered cutting-edge, advanced training in qualitative and quantitative social science methods under highly experienced international faculty from the U.S. and Europe, and it provided 65 participants with rigorous training in state-of-the-art research methods.

Spanning a period of two weeks, the IPSA-FLACSO M茅xico Summer School 2016 gave scholars as well as masters and PhD students in M茅xico and other Latin American countries a unique opportunity to expand their knowledge of social science research methods, discuss research interests, network, and participate in an evening lecture series. The evening lectures saw each of the instructors discuss their research, and Mexican academics led the discussions concerning substantive and methodological implications. FLACSO M茅xico also offered a math refresher course at no extra cost to participants intent on acquiring the minimum level required for each of the six courses offered.
