Applications are sought for three Research Fellows, one each to conduct research as part of Equalise: ESRC Centre for Lifecourse Health Equity on: · place-based health inequalities from a life course perspective · the role of work – the working environment, job characteristics and participation – in reducing health inequalities from a life course perspective · the role of care – both childcare and adult care, generally unpaid – in reducing health inequalities from a life course perspective Equalise is a new £9M research centre funded by the UK Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), for five years in the first instance, currently until 30/09/2029, to provide evidence on solutions to reduce health inequalities. The work of the Centre is structured around four substantive themes: Learning, Work, Care, and Place, as well as a fifth Synthesis theme, drawing findings together across themes. These post-holders will be responsible for research within the Place, Work and Care themes respectively, primarily using advanced quantitative methods on survey, administrative and synthetic data, while also contributing to the Synthesis theme, and also working closely with colleagues using qualitative methods and policy and practice partners within the Centre. Centre Fellows will also undertake short collaborative projects across themes and different methodological approaches. The Research Department of Epidemiology & Public Health is a world-leading and multi-disciplinary research department that conducts timely, rigorous and independent research with sound statistical methods into a better understanding of health and the prevention of ill health. Our research focuses on a wide range of public health concerns such as heart disease; dental public health; mental health and well-being; and child development and ageing. Our research has significant real-world impact, informing policy and practice both in the United Kingdom and around the world. Each of these posts is an excellent opportunity for a researcher keen to progress their career as part of a very strong multidisciplinary and multisectoral team. We are seeking highly motivated individuals to conduct research for the ESRC funded project: Equalise: ESRC Centre for Lifecourse Health Equity The successful candidates will join a multidisciplinary research team to carry out research primarily using advanced quantitative methods on survey, administrative and synthetic data. The work of the Centre is structured around four substantive themes: Learning, Work, Care, and Place, as well as a fifth Synthesis theme, drawing findings together across themes. These roles also involve contributing to the Synthesis theme, and working closely with colleagues using qualitative methods and policy and practice partners within the Centre.

Applicants should have PhD, or soon to complete a PhD, in relevant epidemiological, social science, statistical or bioinformatic related discipline, including health economics. You will be able to demonstrate experience/ have strong interest in advanced quantitative analysis using STATA or R, preferably using large population surveys or administrative data and experience of synthesising evidence. You will have excellent verbal communication skills with the ability to present scientific findings and participate constructively in meetings, the ability to generate ideas creatively and apply theory to empirical research, excellent organisational and time management skills, and the ability to take initiative and problem-solve and to work positively and cooperatively with colleagues and students. You will have a commitment to external engagement and promoting the impact of research and to professional development in all areas of the role, and have a professional attitude toward colleagues, students and others. Please note that appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, the initial appointment will be as a Research Assistant on Grade 6B, Spine point 25 (salary £37,332 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis with no corrections. Salaries are inclusive of London Allowance. Interviews will be held in person 29-31 January 2025.
